Good design requires strategy, planning, and purpose.
First you should know the difference between a web developer and a web designer. A web developer’s job is to make your website function. A web developer writes the code that controls the functionality of your website. A web designer makes your site visually appealing, designs graphics, puts color schemes together, etc. Web developers and designers work in conjunction with one another to create sites that function properly and look nice.
I do both. I am a web designer and developer which means I create websites that function perfectly and look great. Hiring someone that does both aspects is a great thing because you are dealing with one person. It avoids confusion and mistakes and makes for a better design experience. Of course there are many capable developers and designers that successfully work in conjunction with one another on a daily basis. However, it is an added bonus to deal with one person that can bring both the functionality and the design of your vision to life. If you already have graphics or have a graphic designer you work with, I can work with what you have to create a beautiful website.
It is of the utmost importance that you hire a web designer/developer that is educated and knows what they are doing. There are many people that call themselves web designers that may be able to get something up on the web for you, but that doesn’t mean it is properly written and properly organized code, which is super important for search engine optimization. Most of the time it doesn’t look too appealing either. What goes on behind the scenes of your website is just as important, if not more important, than what visitors to your website see. Beware of very low prices to get a website done. The price of hiring someone to do the job right the first time is invaluable. It is very costly to have a bad website fixed. When I have clients come to me to fix a horrible website someone else did, it is less expensive for me to completely start from scratch and create a whole new website rather than trying to fix someone else’s badly written code.
This is a get what you pay for scenario. Do your research and don’t end up spending dollars to save quarters.
